It's my mom's B-day today, so I drew her a gift.

The character's been in my head for a while, but I finally drew her today.

This is Princess Aoi, she's a pixie. She's also Hatsu's best friend. I'm so in love with her character design! I'm so proud of myself and I hope I get a chance to draw her more soon :)

Yeah...

Usually, I try not to post my fan art work up here because I don't free that it always showcases my best work and in some cases I don't put as much time and effort in to them.

This is not one of those times.

A few months ago I got into the wonderful series, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic created by the amazing Lauren Faust. It helped break up the stress & insanity that was my last semester of college, so I extremely grateful for that.

Since I'm out of school and finally have free some time (to much free time) I decided to make some fan art based on one of my favorite MLP episodes called, "Suited for Success".

I wanted to draw this traditionally as opposed to digitally because I seldom ever see anyone make traditional MLP fan art and because I haven't worked in maker in a while. I know there are a lot of mistakes, I still might go back and add a couple of things... >.>

It took me forever to finish... I tried to keep to the original designs as much as possible. Each girl took about a day to complete.

Hatsu Timeline: 2007-2011

I think between all the confusion and craziness running around during my graduation this past May I totally forgot to post this. It's my final project for my Graphic Novel class. I felt that curriculum of the class could have benefited from a little more structure, but I can't complain to much... I got to learn much more about the art of comics, while still earning academic credits. Couldn't ask for a better class :)

Anyway, my final consisted of making a summary, character sheets, and a comicbook page. I thought I'd use my character Hatsu Moto, the mini forest emp, since she's been present throughout my time in college.

2007:
Hatsu is a relatively recent character. She was created during a watercolor drawing practice assignment during my first semester of college:

2008:
I was finally able to get my hands on my own copy of Photoshop CS3! I was so excited that I thought I'd try my hand at digital drawing.

This was my first completed digital drawing in Photoshop ever. Not to great, but it was a start.

Later that year, I completed my Animation 2 college course by creating a faux animated opening title sequence called, "The Days Of Hatsu Moto" :)

2009:
2009 was the year I tried my hand at digitally coloring a full animation for my Animation 3 college course. The animation was never finished because that kind of digital coloring took way too long to complete for each individual frame. However, Hatsu, and several of my other original characters are featured in it.

2010:
Hatsu is one of several of my original characters to be featured as a guest in my degree project talk show animation, "DTV". She was only featured for a few seconds, but so far she seems to get the best viewer reaction than any other character in the animation. She is voiced by me.

2011:
Finally, for one of my last classes in college, The Grapic Novel, we had to make a summary, character sheets, and a comicbook page. So, I thought, "why not use Hatsu?"

Summary:

The Days Of Hatsu Moto takes place in present day Los Angeles. The story chronicles the life of a mini forest imp named Hatsu Moto and her quest to save a man’s soul from his own ill-deeds and crude personality, which has been prophesied will lead to is death 3 years from now.

Hatsu plays the literal conscience to Rodney, the man who she’s supposed to “save”. She does this by accompanying Rodney where ever he goes and by putting him through many seemingly ridiculous tests, much to his dismay.

Despite her tiny size (she’s only 5 inches tall), Hatsu is very resourceful, and having magical powers doesn’t hurt either. Rodney initially despises Hatsu’s presence and finds her constantly chipper attitude and high-pitched voice extremely annoying. However, he very slowly starts to warm up to her.

I felt happy doing this because it made me feel so sentimental. As a character, Hatsu was born during my first year of college, in one of my first courses. For those who don't know, Hatsu means "first" in Japanese (初). Throughout my college years Hatsu Moto has been a resource for me to use to push myself to try new things. And while all those things may not have worked, I still learned so much from doing them and I'm a better artist/person for it.

So thank you Hatsu, my little forest imp :) <3

Well it's done... It's not perfect but it's as done as it's gonna get for a while...:P

I had to rerecord the audio of me speaking because my teacher's said the first reading was kind of dull and and didn't really showcase my personality. So to remedy this me and one of my teachers did a test rerecording wherein he (gently) punched me in the leg repeatedly to get a more... "enthusiastic" reaction out of me. It worked so he told me to get someone else to do something like that when I did the new recording. So I got my mom to do it and she threw books, tape, towels and water at me through the whole duration of rerecording. You can hear it a little in the animation.

The soundtrack itself is not really a 100% in my opinion because I didn't have time to properly clean-up the new audio and I didn't get the updated musical score from my composer on time. So I had to speed up the original music he gave me, (which was timed to the first recording), and match it the new recording. It works... sort of.

I originally wanted to line and color my animation work in flash then shadow it in Photoshop, but my teacher pointed out that I really didn't have the luxury of time to do that so he suggested
I settle on a more simple coloring.

We went back and looked at the style tests I did in 2009 for my first Degree Project and both decided that "number 5" would be a reasonable choice.

Now that's it's done, I need to enter it in as many festivals as possible and start looking for a job... Crap.

I'm at the home stretch for my "Phi-Phi on the T.V." animation. I need to finish it this week for my school's animation festival.

I was watching my Powerpuff Girls DVD a few months ago and was again inspired by the background work of Joseph Giardina. I will always be amazed by his artwork. He doesn't over-complicate this and it's beautiful.

As the title says, I'll be at Anime Boston this week from April 22-24 in the Artist Alley, Table 81! I'm sharing a table with my animation buddies Rebecca Wong and Makeba Bostic.

I usually don't like to post fanart stuff up on here, as I don't think it always showcases my best work and besides I have my deviantART account for that. However, I'm posting this because I'm venturing into my second real chance to sale my artwork. My first time two years ago was rather unsuccessful... Hopefully this year will be better.

I also made a tutorial video on how I colored my "Vocal Moon" print in Photoshop CS3 to promote our table:

I originally wanted to create this animation back in 2009 for my Senior Animation Degree Project, but was urged not to, as I was told that most animation companies would not be interested in hiring me after seeing it because, "Everyone does animations about robots" and it's nothing new.

:(

So, I created DTV instead... And I while I'm proud of myself for getting though a such difficult & aggravating project, and learned a lot from working on it, I'm generally dissatisfied with the animation and wish it could have been better.

Anyway, a couple of months ago I showed to my original pitch idea to my animation advisor and he loved the idea. So, we decided that during my last semester I could finally animate my first DP idea as an independent study.

The animatic uses most of the original audio from my 2009 pitch. My advisor thought it might be a fun idea to make a full animation using the original audio as a narration. Why not? :)

Hopefully this will be done by the end of April this year, but I doubt it... I will be graduating soon after all... :)

Hey everybody! I'm still a little bit busy right now, but I thought I'd share my semi-Christmas themed picture I finished the other day.

Yeah... This is the product of the insane dreams I had during finals this pass semester and boy, were they a dozy! I started getting into the habit of writting them down to remember them.

"I was going out Christmas shopping with my mom, which is a normal, but we were shopping at a Bradlees, which has been closed for years… I haven’t been in one since I was like, ten. Then Mr. Spock pops out of nowhere and starts helping me Christmas shop… For some reason after that, I’m in a shopping cart with my hands up in the air shouting, “Whee!” Spock is pushing me around in the cart and he has the same perpetual :| expression on his face while he’s doing it. I lol’d. We went all around Bradlees, and then into the mall area, through the halls, up and down the escalators, (I don’t know how we managed that…). I have no idea where my mom wondered off to… Then we ended up on the moon, but it wasn’t the regular moon, it was that “moon city” moon from episode 22 of Excel Saga, minus the Puuchus.

We walked around for a bit… then I woke up."

My dreams became more surprisingly detail oriented as the week went on. They go from me wanting waffles and my laptop, to me and my animation classmates clashing with the cast of Glee. I wish I kidding.

I hope I get a chance to draw them all. :)

I actually won last year which was great. However, I still feel like I have no chance of winning regardless, because within minutes they had all ready picked a favorite and seemingly ignored everyone else's :(

Teahouse comic Contest FAIL

This is sort of embarrassing, but a couple of months ago I entered a contest for a webcomic called the Teahouse. The comic has amazing writing and gorgeous artwork. For the contest, the creator wanted people to draw their characters. I made two entries.

Long story short, I didn't win, I didn't even get an honorable mention :( , but I thought I'd share.

Since I haven't colored anything traditionally in a while, I thought I'd try with this entry. Sketched in pencil, inked with black 05 & 08 point Prismacolor pens, colored with Prismacolor markers.

I randomly decided to do the second entry using the pen tool even though I suck at using it. Sketched in pencil, drawn in Photoshop CS3.

F'ing around with the pen tool... Since one of my watchers on deviantART was awesome enough to to gift me with a one year subscription, I thought I would try to make my own custom journal template. Artist In Wonderland Preview: Progress Page 10

Oh my gosh! I can't believe I'm updating this thing within a month! :O

Anyway, I thought I'd share the process work for one of my upcoming comics I'm doing this summer, "Artist In Wonderland". The comic was created for my Narrative Illustration class.

The story is about me as I journey from the real world to Wonderland on a really bad day. The story features me and my friends Amanda Myers, Erika "Rew" Hapke, and Andrew Clapper.

Here's the process work of page 10

First, I drew a crappy little thumbnail drawing of the page. It's about 2 and a half inches in size.

Next, is the bigger thumbnail drawing that maps out the final page. This is about 4 x 5.5 inches in size.

After that, is a clean sketch of the final comic page. The page was drawn at 12 x 16 inches in size.
NOTE: Since this comic was intended to be sketchy (by both my teacher and myself), there is no need to ink the sketch. It can be colored right after this step.

After I scan the picture on to the computer, it's time for coloring! My favorite! I start off with only flat colors.

Then, I add the shadowing. Three layers of shadows were used for this page.

Finally, the highlights. I LOVE shininess!

Oh man... I have been so bad with updating this thing. I'm sorry, I've just been so busy as of late... ^^;

I've been completely done with classes for the summer for a little under a month, and let me tell you something: I am so relieved! Degree Project (DP) was NO joke... I barely finished it! And while not totally satisfied with it, I have to at least pat myself on the back for completing something so crazy and difficult. I had to drop one of my critical studies classes just to focus more on DP and I still didn't have enough time! I'll post the mostly finalized version of my Degree Project movie here soon, but I wanted to update the DP blog with all the extra progress work first ^^;

My Animation Portfolio class was really great! I was really stressed at times because I was worried about finding time to work on DP, but it was so awesome getting our professional stuff done. I'll show you all the business cards, dvds, and dvd covers, I did in another post soon! Also, I really need to thank my teacher for being so understanding about my situations with DP throughout the semester. You rock Steve! :D

Narrative Illustration, the class I busted my butt to get into, did not, unfortunately, live up to my expectations, mainly because of the professor who taught the class. Their bad attitude, short-temper, tactlessness, and unwillingness to take responsibly for things, made for a difficult working environment and made me all too glad that I was part of the Animation Department.

Unpleasantness aside, I did learn a lot of great things about narrative illustration. One of our assignments for the class was to make a children's story book with some very odd constraints.

The teacher gave me and each of my classmates a small plastic toy sea creature or insect. We then had to create a short story that started and ended in 8 pages or panels featuring the creature we were given. Also, the story had start with the line, "One Fine Day, a giant _______ fell to earth."

Since I got a purple crab, guess what mine was about... That's right! A DOG! :D

Anyway, I wanted to make the style cute and fun, for a children's book, but also simple to draw as possible. This was because I would have to complete multiple other assignments for this class during this assignment, and I had to worry about work from other classes... Like DP.

I first started the assignment by sketching the whole story on (crappy) normal paper. It didn't need to be perfect, but it had to be clean enough that others could understand it and that I would be able to change it if needed.

Next, linework. I wanted a very clean, but simplistic line, so I decided to do the linework in Flash.

I couldn't figure out at first how I wanted to color it, but I did want to experiment. Finally, I came up with the idea to try a technique I learned from my super awesome teacher from last semester, John Roman.

The technique involved painting with watercolor on watercolor paper or bristol board, then scanning the paper into Photoshop and applying the watercolor to the figure, background, etc.

It didn't make much since, as they only ended up taking the two sheet paper copy version, but my teacher strongly suggested I bind my book together, for the reason that it was meant to be viewed as a storybook. My teacher lightly mocked my lack of book binding skills, and though annoying, it was true. But hey, I did the best I could.

So here's it is the finished product in "comic form", the way I handed it to my teacher.

And before you say it, yes, I know it's missing the word "do ", but I'm not going back through several Photoshop documents just to change it. I'm lazy, I admit it :P

This was a cool assignment and I was very happy with the results. I'm not interested in writing children's books, however I think I would definitely consider illustrating one.

Children's Book Illustration revamp

It's been a while... Crap. >.<

I have been dying to update this thing for a while now but between the stress of my Degree Project and me having to Full Restore my computer twice within a six month period, it has been nearly impossible to do so...

Anyway, since I have a lot to post, I'm going to put my certain art pieces in there own seperate post :D

First, I'm currently taking Narrative Illustration, which I was dying to get into. Admittedly, it is a little frustrating dealing with my teacher, as she can be rather confusing to understand and quick to become agitated at times, but for the most part I am enjoying taking the class.

This is for my first assignment for the class, which was to was revamp a 60's children book we received at random.

All of my other classmates were super happy with their choices, but I got the lamest one though... "How we celebrate Spring holidays" So I did the best thing I could think of, which was redrawing the pictures."

This was the first time I used a Stabilo marker pen to ink my work. Secretly, I always wanted to have a gray inking pen to help make my marker drawings more painterly, but I didn't even know the existed until recently! :D

I think my teacher was a little disappointed in my book, as I don't think she thought I pushed enough to better the story. I just couldn't get my mind to wrap around of how to "better" the book, as the text was seemingly fine and to the point as it was... The pictures however, were rather dull, so that's what I decided to change. In addition, the assignment was first pegged as a one week job, which meant I had to rush in terms of how I was going to get the book completed. I ended up cutting out ten other holidays to be able to finish the assignment on time which was fine, but it didn't give me a lot of time to plan.

Anyway, this semester I decided to get a studio for the first time, and I gotta say I wish I had gotten one earlier... It's so great! I'm sharing my space with my buddy Amanda Myers. I drew a picture for a picture frame I found to put in our studio.

This is my character Lisa-Marie.

Lisa-Marie doesn't know you, but she does in fact hate you :D

Lisa-Marie is a selfish, mean-spirited, alien princess sent to Earth so she can learn compassion for others. Also, as part of her punishment she's is turned into a little girl so she can start again from scratch. She has one year to convince her family and another opposing planet of her change.. or else....

The picture was made with Prismacolor and Copic Markers, Prismacolor fine liner pen, Watercolor, pigment makers, and gel pens. Drawn on Bristol board :O

Finally, I'm taking Technical Drawing this semester, which seems to be going well. Here's my first completed assignment on One Point Perspective. Drawn on Velum, inked with Prismacolor Fine Liner pen.

My friends Nilani, Rebecca, and Rew are featured in this picture. Unfortunately, I made Rew look like to much of a guy. She's very pretty!

My TD teacher, John Roman and I are getting along well, much to my surprise, because I thought he disliked me. I was wrong! He has even offered me his assistance to critique my background work for my Degree Project. I'm so excited! :D

EPICLY huge post is EPIC--- Summer Work

Wow... I totally went "up yours" to updating anything... Sorry about that. Summer was painfully boring and I didn't get much work on the AZU Project done...

I made a lot of artwork during the the Summer, but most of them weren't anything special... I started this work series on DeviantART called "Total Drama Sketch-a-thon", which is basically me drawing the whole Total Drama cast in my style.

I did it because I was bored and it was was suppose to be fun... It has now turned into something that is a tad bit annoying to do. Why you ask? Well for starters, I have gotten a lot of people watching my DA page now. Not people who watch because they actually like my work, no. I keep getting the people who harass me constantly to draw their favorite character. Which wouldn't be as annoying if I didn't clearly under each piece that I am NOT going in "any real order. I pick them in the order I drew them in my sketchbook, which is random." People seem to flat out ignore that one... :P

If I do ever continue the series, it'll be because I want to. Right now I have crazy college senior stuff to deal with, but try telling that to rabid teenage fanboys and girls... I almost wish I had never started it... :(

Also during the summer I got cheated out if some artwork because of my severe lack of salesmanship skills. Ugh...

Truth be told, this started off kind of fun, but working with a client I didn't really like, on top of them being kind of annoying, was a real pain. She was too indecisive and very manipulative.

I wasn't paid for this job because in exchange, since I wanted to sell my artwork at HealthWorks and people who sell there have to give there organization a 20% commission or $250 of sales (which is a ripoff), we negotiated that I would do the drawings for the Youth Fitness Zone and then I wouldn't have to pay anything.

The client later said that I would have to create sets of artwork for her every week in order for me to keep selling artwork. She never mentioned such a constraint before I did the work for her, which made me quite upset. And that was the end of that... She was a horrible woman :(

Now that that's all over, my favorite summer picture was a vector piece called "Outlines Are Overrated" Featuring my character Tigger and my kitty Salem :D

I also made this quote, "Never limit yourself with imaginary outlines... Live life to the fullest and reach for your dreams. <3"

It took me a while to do because I started to get really frustrated with it... It had been sitting half finished for over a month, then finally, since I figured this is my last weekend work free, I thought I'd finish it. I :heart: Vector! :D

Sorry I haven't posted here in a little while... After the big Anime Boston disappointment [see here] and a super bad semester, I haven't really felt like posting much...Not only that but after the convention I got REALLY sick, then had to write a huge paper for my horrible North Renaissance class... ;__;

I'm also in the midst of a terrible case of insomnia... :P

Anyway, I thought I'd post something... so here's one of the final animations from my Animation 4 class: "The Powerpuff Girls" Style Test. Based on the style of Craig McCracken and Joseph Giardina.

I am NEVER using Frame Thief to shoot my inked frames again! It makes my linework look horrible :(

The other two style tests didn't pan out too well.......... :/

Also, here's my "Bird Calls" animation with the completed sound design work, by the wonderful Phoebe Danskin! :D

This semester was a huge disappointment and definitely not my best... I have to completely re-color my PSA animation, because based the my on review (which went very badly) inking my animation was a terrible idea... This is something I didn't mind hearing too much, but really wish my teacher would have informed me of before I had invested so much time in it, since they were the one who suggested inking it in the first place. ;__;

I hope next semester goes better.

This summer hopefully, I can find a job and work on some of my side art projects that were on hold for school. Like, the AZU Project:

Finally done... w00t. I've spent days working on this and I'm still not completely satisfied... but whatev's. I've got a paper to write now, and less than 24 hours to do it....

I've have some experience vectoring this but this was my first time vectoring something realistically and in Adobe Illustrator CS3. It was super hard to do on top of the fact that I started to get rather anal about it...

We had to make an abstract picture using the vector brushes we made.

I kinda hate drawing realistic stuff in Illustrator, but it's super fun making totally crap in it... :D

Hey, Blogger did a super weird thing... It changed the color of my work (on the left) into the one on the right. So I inverted the colors of that one to make the one in the middle.

I did a color and ink test for my PSA animation since it was needed. I can definitely ink faster by hand than I can digitally, so I guess that's what I'll be doing for my whole PSA. Not sure about the color but I think I like it. :)

I've been super self-conscious about all of my work lately and I don't know why... I really need to over it... It's super annoying...

My movie, The First of May got nominated for three awards at the Sundeis Film Festival! And while I know it's a small festival I can't help but feel super excited! It's a honor just to be nominated!

I've never used the pen tool to do ANYTHING before, so... yeah....

I finally got a new sketchbook I fill one up every semester.

I realized that sometimes there is a bit of stress to have the first page of your sketch book look good so I've decided to mark it as such.

My first speed painting wasn't very speedy... ack

Another piece for Digital Illustration. We had to get really up close and personal to a piece of fruit (or vegetable) we picked and digitally paint it.

A lot of prep work went into this: 15 thumbnails, color and value studies... naa, I looks cool though.

I'm rather proud of this piece though I know I'm gonna get pwn'd by everyone else on Tuesday...

Finally finshed! Well the animation portion is....

I'm going to be working with a Berklee student to add background sounds and possibly music to this animation. I'll put up that version when it's finished.

My second to last animation for my Animation III class is probably the most production heavy assignment I've done yet... :P

The assignment was to go to and create an animation based on an artist with sound found on the website. I picked "Birdcalls" (God knows why...) by photographer Lousie Laweler.

This assignment is about 1 minute and 30 seconds of hand drawn animation, full of composting, over layering movements, and 3 extremely annoying women making bird calls for no apparent reason.

My main major is Animation but I thought I'd take an Illustration course as well.

For my Digital Illustration assignment I started yesterday. We had to create a monster.

We were pretty much told to not think too much about creating it and just go with it... Unfortunately, I started thinking too much and couldn't come up with anything.
